Maine Home + Design, January 2016

Here's a sneak peek of a very nice article about my work in the January 2016 edition the Maine Home+Design (MH+D) magazine. The article features Frozen Light #10. (To see more from the Frozen Light series, click here.)  I will let you know once the full article is posted on the magazine's website.

On a different note, I have finally succumbed and established a Facebook page for my art work. Here's the link, for those of you who might be interested in following me.

Uncharted Constellations (Revised)

This series is a meditation on the mystery of the night sky, re-imagined in the daylit winter snows of northern Maine. These constellations are charted only in my imagination, and evoke the memory of star-filled landscapes gathered from my travels around the world. Some transport me to the desert hills outside Tucson; others to the foothills of Nepal or to a cloudless night in the Philippines. These uncharted constellations recall the fluidity of time, space, and memory and the endless wonder of the stars.

Adagio

How do we find our way through dark times? One of life’s great surprises is how, even when the heart has been broken open from grief, we can still find moments of light and joy. For me, a moment of sadness may be transformed into one of profound delight when I stop and immerse myself in the sound of the wind in the trees, the curve of a blade of grass, light shimmering on the ocean, or simply the sensations of breath itself. In the Adagio series, as petals float and dance through time, I celebrate these moments of joy-filled connection that have been so uplifting during difficult times.

In the waning days of autumn, after the parting burst of colour, I explored tidal pools and puddles where leaves had fallen. There I expected to see fading and decay, but instead I often found subtle beauty, intensified by the twilight and encroaching darkness. For me these images conjure up wisps of memories of my mother and her decline through Alzheimer's where there too, as I watched the fading away, the softening of lines, the dissolution of realities, I caught glimpses of her inner beauty shining in the darkness.

Uncharted Constellations in Cambridge, MA

Uncharted Constellations #9, from a new series (see more), was recently selected for inclusion in an exhibit in Cambridge, MA.

University Place Gallery
Cambridge, MA
12 March-17 April, 2015
Opening: 12 March (6-8PM)

"Uncharted Constellations" is a meditation on the mystery of the night sky, but with stars that have never been seen before; stars that have been charted only in my imagination. These are dreams of star-filled landscapes, gathered from memories of my travels around the world, re-imagined in the mid-winter snows of northern Maine. Some evoke memories of the desert hills outside Tucson; others the foothills of Nepal or of gazing deep into a clear night sky from a village in the Philippines. These uncharted constellations recall the fluidity of time, space, and memory and the endless wonder of the stars.
